At what age can you christen children?

At what age can you christen children?

You can christen children at any age – the earlier the better.  The child’s parents can and must be present in the church and pray for their child during the sacrament, including the case of the child being less than forty days old.

According to the church’s regulations, the Godparent for the child and an adult is chosen of the same gender as the christened. However, according to traditions of the Russian Church, the christened has two godparents – a godfather and godmother. It is also possible to choose a godparent of the different gender from the christened. The main requirement when choosing a godparent is that they need to be christened in Orthodoxy as well as follow Orthodoxy. Godparents can’t be heterodox (non-Orthodox Christian) or non-Christian. Moreover, godparents can’t be married to the christened person. There is a possibility for the godparent and the christened to get married in the future. It is impossible to become a godparent without taking part in sacrament.

You can ask the priest any questions concerning canonical sacraments, the meaning and the reasoning of prayers and hierurgies.
